Why Does This India vs Sri Lanka Semi Final Look So One Sided?
The simple answer is team selection. India picked the Asian Games squad as a proper T20 side. Shreyas Iyer leads a group that includes Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Arshdeep Singh. Most of that XI could walk into India’s World Cup team.
Sri Lanka made a different call. Niroshan Dickwella is back in national colours for the first time in about five years. Nuwan Thushara, with 36 wickets in 31 T20Is, is the one front line international bowler in the group.
So why give Sri Lanka any chance at all? Because T20 cricket on a slow pitch shrinks the gap between strong and weak teams. A total of 130 can be enough at this ground, and a couple of good overs from Sri Lanka’s spinners could put India’s batters under the kind of pressure they have not faced all week. India have also not played a match since arriving in Japan, so there is rust to shake off.
Can Rain Send India to the Final Without Playing?
Yes, and it would not be the first time. The rule used throughout this event says that if no result is possible in a knockout game, the higher ranked team goes through. India are the top ranked T20I side in the world, so a washout today sends them straight to the gold medal match.
That rule has already shaped this tournament heavily. All four quarter finals were abandoned without a ball bowled, which is how India reached this semi final without facing Afghanistan. Something similar decided the gold medal in 2023. In Hangzhou, India met Afghanistan in the final, rain arrived during Afghanistan’s innings, and the match was called off. India took gold because of their higher seeding.
The forecast for this afternoon looks much better than earlier in the week, with most previews showing a low chance of rain. But the outfield has taken a lot of water over several days, so a delayed start and a shortened game are still possible. For Sri Lanka, any interruption is bad news. They need the match to be played, and ideally in full, to give their batters time to build an innings.

Pathum Nissanka answered with a brilliant hundred and Sri Lanka also reached 202. Arshdeep Singh then bowled the Super Over, conceded only 2 runs and took two wickets. India again finished it in one ball.
Why does this matter today? Because Washington Sundar and Arshdeep Singh, the two men who bowled those Super Overs, are both in India’s Asian Games squad. If this semi final goes to a Super Over, India have two bowlers who have done this exact job against Sri Lanka before. Sri Lanka’s current squad has almost nobody who played in either match, because those players are in England.
The wider lesson is that Sri Lanka tend to push India closer in T20Is than the head to head suggests. Even a weakened Sri Lankan team has a history of making these games tight in the final overs.

India’s biggest selection question is whether 15 year old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets a game. He is one of the most talked about young batters in the country, but with Abhishek, Samson and Kishan all in form at the top, he is likely to wait. Abhishek Sharma vs Nuwan Thushara. This is the contest of the first two overs. Abhishek attacks from ball one and has cleared the ropes against every kind of bowler.
