How Did India Win the First Two ODIs?

1st ODI, Thiruvananthapuram: India won by 8 wickets. West Indies raced to 176 for 1 before Kuldeep Yadav’s 4 for 40 dragged them back to 295 for 7. Virat Kohli then hit 139 not out off 88 balls and became the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, while Shubman Gill made 110. Our India vs West Indies 1st ODI result report covers that game in full.

2nd ODI, Guwahati: India won by 8 wickets again. This one was historic. West Indies made 405 for 7, their highest ODI total ever, with hundreds from John Campbell (101 off 68), Shai Hope (104 off 94) and Amir Jangoo (114 off 70). It still was not enough. India chased 406 in 43.3 overs. Gill made 223 not out off 133 balls, reaching his double century in 117 balls, the fastest in ODI history. Rohit Sharma added 101 off 72 in an opening stand of 255.

Put those two games side by side and a pattern shows up. West Indies have batted well in both matches, especially at the top. But they have not been able to stop India’s top three. In two chases, India lost only four wickets in total.

That makes the 3rd ODI an interesting test. West Indies know their batting can compete. The question is whether a new venue and fresh legs can give their bowlers a chance.

Why Did West Indies Lose After Scoring 405?

Scoring 405 and losing by 8 wickets is very rare in ODI cricket. The 811 runs in Guwahati made it the third highest aggregate in men’s ODI history, and India’s chase was the second highest successful chase ever.

Three things went wrong for West Indies with the ball.

  1. No early wickets. Rohit and Gill added 255 before the first wicket fell. Without a breakthrough in the first 10 overs, a team chasing 400 can pace the innings however it likes.
  2. No spin control. Roston Chase went for 63 in 8.3 overs without a wicket. Gudakesh Motie did not play. On Indian pitches, a team that cannot slow the game down in the middle overs is in trouble.
  3. Too short, too often. India reached 300 in 29.1 overs, the fastest in ODI history. That only happens when bowlers keep offering width and length to hit.

Across both matches, West Indies’ bowlers have taken just four wickets. That is the real story of this series. West Indies’ batting has given them two chances, and their bowling has let both slip.

What can they change? Bringing back Motie gives them a left arm spinner who can hold an end. Matthew Forde adds control with his medium pace. The fast bowlers, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales, need to hit a fuller length early and attack the stumps.

What Is Still at Stake in a Dead Rubber?

The series trophy is decided, but this match still matters for several reasons.

For India: World Cup auditions. Every ODI India play until late 2027 counts towards building the World Cup squad. Players on the edge of the side, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Mohammed Siraj and the uncapped Auqib Nabi, want game time. Prasidh Krishna has been ruled out injured, and Anshul Kamboj has been added to the squad.

For India: a rare double day. India’s T20 side plays Pakistan in the Asian Games gold medal match in Japan the same morning, while this ODI team plays in the afternoon. India will play two men’s internationals on the same day, with two different captains and almost no overlap in the squads. You can follow that campaign on our Asian Games 2026 cricket schedule and squads page.

For West Indies: avoiding a whitewash. West Indies sit near the bottom of the ODI rankings and face the World Cup qualifiers next year. Leaving India with one win would show their improvement is real. Their last ODI win in India came at Chennai in December 2019.

For individual records. Gill is chasing a third straight hundred. Rohit needs one more ton for 36. Kohli has already scored more ODI hundreds against West Indies than anyone, and a 56th career hundred would stretch his world record further.

India vs West Indies 3rd ODI at Mullanpur: What Will the Pitch Do?

This is the first men’s ODI at Mullanpur, so there is no ODI history to lean on. The stadium has hosted Punjab Kings’ IPL games since 2024 and international women’s cricket. The general view from those matches is that the red soil pitch offers good, even bounce once a batter is set. Seamers can get some early movement, and spinners find grip later in the day.

Expect a high scoring game, though probably not as flat as Guwahati. A first innings total of 320 to 340 looks par.

The weather should stay dry. With a 2:00 PM start, the second innings will be played under lights, and evening dew could make the ball harder for bowlers to grip. That favours the team batting second.

The head to head was close for decades. West Indies dominated the 1980s and early 1990s, while India have won most matches since the late 2000s. This series has added two more wins to India’s column, but it has also rewritten the record book of the fixture.

Top runs in India vs West Indies ODIs. Virat Kohli leads the list with more than 2,400 runs and 10 hundreds against West Indies, the most by any batter against them. Rohit Sharma is also high on the list, and his 101 in Guwahati made him the third Indian, after Tendulkar and Kohli, to reach 12,000 ODI runs.

Top wickets in India vs West Indies ODIs. Ravindra Jadeja came into the series level with Courtney Walsh on 44 wickets, the most in this fixture. He went wicketless in the first ODI, then took two in Guwahati, which puts him clear at the top. Kuldeep Yadav reached 200 ODI wickets in the second match, the fastest Indian spinner to do it.

For West Indies, Shai Hope’s hundred in Guwahati was his 20th in ODIs, second only to Chris Gayle for West Indies. Hope has been their most reliable batter against India for nearly a decade.

India vs West Indies Squads for the 3rd ODI

India: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice captain, wicketkeeper), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Naman Dhir, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi

Change: Anshul Kamboj replaces the injured Prasidh Krishna.

West Indies: Shai Hope (captain, wicketkeeper), John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Jewel Andrew, Amir Jangoo, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Keemo Paul, Matthew Forde, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, Gudakesh Motie, Vitel Lawes

Justin Greaves, who scored a hundred in the first ODI, is a doubt for this match.

India’s choice: Rotation is possible but not guaranteed. India have looked happy to keep the top order together, as Gill, Rohit and Kohli are all in form. The most likely changes are in the bowling, with Siraj returning after sitting out the first two games and Kamboj replacing Prasidh. If India do rest someone, Jaiswal for Gaikwad or Jurel for Rahul are the obvious swaps.

West Indies’ choice: With Greaves doubtful, Keacy Carty and Jewel Andrew are likely to stay in the middle order. Motie and Forde should come in to add control, which may mean one of the fast bowlers or Keemo Paul sits out. Teenage wrist spinner Vitel Lawes is a dark horse if West Indies want a wicket taking option in the middle overs.

Which Battles Will Decide the India vs West Indies 3rd ODI?

Shubman Gill vs Alzarri Joseph. Gill has made 110 and 223 not out in this series. Alzarri has the pace and bounce to test him early, especially if there is any movement on a new pitch. If West Indies get Gill in the first 10 overs, they can finally put India under pressure.

Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo vs Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep took four wickets in the first ODI and two in the second. Hope plays spin well off the back foot, and Jangoo was brilliant against it in Guwahati. If these two can score freely against Kuldeep in overs 15 to 35, West Indies will post another big total.

Ravindra Jadeja vs John Campbell. Campbell has made 62 and 101 in this series and has been West Indies’ fastest scorer at the top. Jadeja’s left arm spin, turning away from the left handed opener, could be important on a pitch that grips later. Each wicket also adds to his new record in this fixture.

BattersShubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Amir Jangoo, John Campbell
All roundersRavindra Jadeja, Roston Chase
BowlersKuldeep Yadav, Alzarri Joseph

Split: India 6, West Indies 5.

  • Captain: Shubman Gill. He has 333 runs in two innings this series. On a good batting pitch, he is the safest choice.
  • Vice captain: Shai Hope. He keeps wicket and bats in the top three. His 104 in Guwahati was his 20th ODI hundred, and he adds points from catches too.
  • Differential: Amir Jangoo. Many users will pick Hope and Campbell but skip Jangoo, even though he made 58 not out and 114 in this series.
  • Bowling pick to back: Kuldeep Yadav. Six wickets in two games on flat pitches make him the most reliable bowler on either side.

Should the Toss Winner Bat or Bowl First?

Our call: bowl first. India have chased successfully in both games, and evening dew in Mullanpur should make batting easier under lights. On a fresh pitch with some early movement, the team bowling first also gets the best of the conditions with the new ball.

The only reason to bat first would be if the pitch looks dry and cracked. Then a big total and spin later in the day could work. But with no ODI history at this ground, most captains will go with what has worked in the series so far.

Prediction: India 72 percent, West Indies 28 percent.

Our India vs West Indies 3rd ODI prediction backs India because their top three are in remarkable form and their spinners have been the difference in both games. Even if India rotate a few players, their bench is stronger than most international XIs.

West Indies can win only if their bowlers take early wickets, something they have not done all series. Their batting has proven it can post 400 in India. If they pair that with a disciplined bowling plan and a couple of wickets inside the first 10 overs, this could be close. If not, expect India to finish the series 3 to 0.

Signing Off From Mullanpur

Two matches into this series, India have chased down targets of 296 and 406 for the loss of just four wickets. That is a frightening rate of success, and it is hard to see a new ground changing it. Still, West Indies have shown real progress with the bat. Campbell, Hope and Jangoo have all scored hundreds against a strong Indian attack, which is good news for their World Cup qualifying campaign. The difference has been with the ball. If West Indies find even a little bowling discipline on Saturday, they can avoid the whitewash. If not, Gill’s side will sign off this series with a clean sweep and another batch of records.
